The Beauty of Honey

Hold on to that honey!

We all know that honey is yummy (well, I think it is), but did you know that honey is a great beauty product?

Honey has natural antibacterial properties, and it is also a humectant, which means that it helps your skin to retain moisture.

Here are some of the ways that I like to use honey:

Face:

If you have a pimple, dab some honey on it, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then wipe it off with a wet cloth.  It’s no miracle cure, but what acne treatment is?  It definitely helps!  Just don’t be tempted to lick it off, which is always my problem.

You can also use honey as a mask for your entire face.  It can be a little sticky and drippy, but it’s not too bad.  Just don’t try to hug someone while wearing it (as I learned from experience).

For acne scarring, I found this recipe at bellasugar.com: Mix 1 tbsp. honey with 1 tsp. ground nutmeg and 1 tsp. ground cinnamon.  Leave it on for up to 30 minutes.

Body:

I like to mix 1 cup of warm water, 1/2 cup of oatmeal, and 1 tbsp. of honey in the blender.  I started using this as a facial wash, but found that I loved it as a body cleanser as well.  If your skin is dry and you don’t like using soap, this stuff is great.  I like to make a new batch every 1-2 weeks.

You can also mix about a tbsp. of honey with water and castile soap to make a moisturizing shower gel.  I’m not fond of castile soap, however, because it seems difficult to rinse off with my hard water.  Maybe when we finally get that water filter…

Hair:

I started using plain honey as a conditioner every morning.  It is lightweight, rinses out very well, and leaves my hair soft and shiny.  Plus, it smells good!

You can also use honey as a deep conditioning treatment. Work some through your hair, then wrap your head in plastic wrap and leave it on for 20-30 minutes.  Then rinse it out.

Be careful if you have dark hair–over time, honey can lighten hair.  But if that’s your aim, then honey can help.  You can use honey by itself or mix it with other natural lighteners, such as chamomile tea, lemon juice, chopped rhubarb, and vodka.  Pour it onto your hair, work through, wrap your head in plastic wrap and let it sit for 20-30 minutes.  Then rinse it out.

What’s great about honey is that it not only works, but it is inexpensive, all-natural, and non-toxic.  It contains no chemicals that can harm you or the planet.

Well, if you can actually put the honey on your body without eating it half the time, you are doing way better than me!  Happy honey-fying!
